Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address the nation at 8:30 pm today, sources have indicated, setting off a wave of speculation across political circles and the public alike.
As of now, there has been no official confirmation regarding the subject of the address. However, the timing has drawn significant attention, coming just a day after a major legislative setback for the Centre in Parliament.
The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, which aimed to introduce 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha, failed to pass after it could not secure the constitutionally mandated two-thirds majority. The proposal also included a substantial increase in the strength of the House — from the current 543 seats to 816 — to accommodate the reservation without reducing existing constituencies.
During the voting process, 528 members participated, with 298 MPs supporting the bill and 230 voting against it. Despite a clear majority in favour, the numbers fell short of the 352 votes required for passage, effectively halting one of the government’s most ambitious political reforms in recent times.
The bill had triggered sharp debate both inside and outside Parliament. Opposition parties criticised the government’s approach, questioning the timing, structure, and intent of the legislation. Some argued that linking women’s reservation to seat expansion and delimitation made the proposal more complex and politically contentious, rather than ensuring immediate implementation of gender representation.
Following the bill’s failure, two additional pieces of legislation — one concerning delimitation and another focused on increasing the number of seats in the Lok Sabha — were not brought to a vote. The Centre maintained that these proposals were “intrinsically linked” to the women’s reservation framework and therefore could not be considered independently.
Against this backdrop, the Prime Minister’s scheduled address assumes added significance. It raises key questions about whether he will respond directly to the political developments, outline the government’s next steps, or shift focus to other pressing national issues. Observers are also watching closely to see if the address signals a recalibration of the government’s legislative strategy or an attempt to regain political momentum after the setback.
