Assam Tensions Rise: Net Suspended as Eviction Clash Erupts Near Bhutan Border

ASSAM BREAKING NEWS NORTHEAST

The Assam government has immediately suspended mobile internet and data services in Chirang district and Kokrajhar district following violent unrest in the Runikhata area on Friday. The clashes erupted during a forest anti-encroachment drive near the India–Bhutan border, triggering serious law-and-order concerns.

Officials said the shutdown was enforced under Section 5(2) of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, along with the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services Rules, 2017. Authorities cited the risk of rumours and provocative content spreading on social media, which could escalate tensions further. While mobile internet has been cut, voice calls and fixed broadband services remain functional.

Clashes Erupt After Detentions During Eviction Drive

The unrest follows an anti-encroachment operation carried out by forest officials in Runikhata on Thursday, during which 25 individuals were detained.

By Friday morning, hundreds of residents — many of them women — gathered outside the Runikhata Forest Range Office, demanding the release of those detained. The protest soon spiralled out of control.

According to reports, tensions escalated after police attempted to disperse the crowd, allegedly using force. Protesters reacted by vandalising the forest office, torching government vehicles, and attempting to set parts of the premises on fire.

Security Crackdown, Roads Blocked

The situation intensified as demonstrators blocked key roads and hurled stones at security personnel. In response, police resorted to tear gas and aerial firing to regain control.

Several people, including women, were injured in the clashes. At least one police personnel also sustained injuriesduring the violence.

Allegations of Assault, Protests Likely to Spread

Local groups, including the All Adivasi Students’ Association and the All Santal Students’ Union, have alleged that women protesters were assaulted during the police action. They also claimed that the eviction drive was conducted without prior notice, raising concerns over due process.

Both organisations have warned of wider protests across the Bodoland Territorial Region in response to the incident.

Police Say Situation Under Control

Mohan Lal Meena confirmed that additional security forces were deployed to contain the unrest. He stated that the situation is now under control and assured that a detailed inquiry will be conducted.

He also urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading or believing unverified information.

Current Situation

While the immediate violence has subsided, tension continues to prevail in the area, with security forces maintaining a strong presence to prevent further escalation.
