TIPRA Motha Warns of Political Crisis in Tripura Over Delay in Tiprasa Accord

A fresh political storm appears to be brewing in Tripura, with the TIPRA Motha Party issuing a strong warning over the non-implementation of the Tiprasa Accord. A senior party leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, signaled that the state could be headed toward a major administrative and political crisis if their demands are ignored.

“If the Centre continues to delay, Tripura will face a situation that cannot be controlled easily,” the leader said.

The party is reportedly preparing a phased escalation strategy, beginning with consolidating control over the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) and intensifying its political movement.

Ministers May Be Withdrawn, Alliance Under Strain

As part of its next steps, TIPRA Motha may withdraw its ministers—Animesh Debbarma and Brishaketu Debbarma—from the state cabinet if no concrete assurance comes from New Delhi.

“We are part of the government, but not at the cost of our people’s rights. Withdrawal from the cabinet is very much on the table,” the leader asserted.

If the deadlock continues, the party may even withdraw support from the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government, a move that could destabilize the current administration.

“Support cannot be unconditional. If our core demands are sidelined, we will reconsider our position,” the source added.

Bigger Political Moves on the Horizon

The warning goes beyond routine political pressure. The leader hinted at more drastic steps that could significantly impact both the state and central leadership.

“What comes next will be unprecedented. It will send a message not just to the state, but to Delhi as well.”

Political observers believe these developments could unfold after election results in states like West Bengal, suggesting a carefully timed strategy.

At the same time, sources indicate that TIPRA Motha is shaping its long-term roadmap for the 2028 Assembly elections, positioning founder Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma as a potential Chief Ministerial candidate.

This strategy could involve sustained pressure on the BJP leadership, potentially weakening the government led by Chief Minister Manik Saha.

There are also murmurs of extreme measures, including the possible resignation of MP Kriti Devi Singh Debbarma, if the situation escalates.

Alliance in Government, Rivalry on Ground

A key contradiction defines Tripura’s current political landscape. While TIPRA Motha and the BJP are allies in government, they remain direct rivals in the ADC.

This divide deepened after the latest ADC elections, where TIPRA Motha registered a significant victory, while the BJP, along with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Indian National Congress, suffered setbacks.

Trust Deficit Among Voters

The party’s shifting political stance has also triggered skepticism among voters. In 2023, Pradyot Debbarma had strongly criticized the BJP for failing tribal communities. However, ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he shared the stage with Amit Shah and backed BJP candidates.

“People are watching closely. Promises were made, but delivery is yet to be seen,” a political observer noted.

This perceived inconsistency has left sections of the tribal electorate uncertain, with many questioning whether their concerns are truly being addressed.

A Crucial Phase Ahead

As the 2026 ADC elections approach, both TIPRA Motha and BJP appear wary of their strategies. A joint contest is seen as risky, potentially giving opposition forces an opportunity to regain ground.

Rising tensions within the alliance and growing dissatisfaction among voters suggest that Tripura may be entering a volatile political phase.

“The coming weeks will decide whether this alliance survives or collapses under pressure,” the leader warned.

Whether negotiations lead to a resolution or confrontation escalates, the outcome will play a decisive role in shaping Tripura’s political future.
